Why Catechists Are Vital: Jubilee Highlights Faith Formation in Minority Regions

The Jubilee of Catechists welcomed more than 20,000 pilgrims from 115 countries. The three-day event gathered diocesan and national catechetical leaders to celebrate those who dedicate their lives to proclaiming the Gospel.

Catechists are charged with making the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ “resound in hearts and minds,” helping others encounter new life in Christ. Their mission involves inviting people to faith, accompanying them on their spiritual journey, teaching the truths of the Church, and witnessing what it means to live as disciples today.

At an EWTN Vatican conference for the Jubilee of Catechists, Monsignor Paolo Martinelli, Vicar Apostolic of Southern Arabia, underscored the essential role of catechists in regions where Catholics are a minority. With only 64 priests in his vicariate, 3,800 catechists sustain Christian formation across Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
